lets think

Week 5: The embryonic period begins

Fetal development three weeks after conception

The fifth week of pregnancy, or the third week after conception, marks the beginning of the embryonic period. This is when the baby's brain, spinal cord, heart and other organs begin to form.

The embryo is now made of three layers. The top layer — the ectoderm — will give rise to your baby's outermost layer of skin, central and peripheral nervous systems, eyes, inner ear, and many connective tissues.

Your baby's heart and a primitive circulatory system will form in the middle layer of cells — the mesoderm. This layer of cells will also serve as the foundation for your baby's bones, muscles, kidneys and much of the reproductive system.

The inner layer of cells — the endoderm — will become a simple tube lined with mucous membranes. Your baby's lungs, intestines and bladder will develop here.

By the end of this week, your baby is likely about the size of the tip of a pen.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/prenatal-care/PR00112

Here are the facts, without the supposed pending emotional trauma and highly dramatic music attached.

Hardly a nightmare to be experienced when passing the developing embryo the size of the tip of a pen through the no greater or remarkable of menses than occurs during a routine menstrual episode.

Need help? Be careful who you ask for it.

Abortion Pill - Fact Not Opinion

Nope, this comes off as a video meant to shame a woman into making a different choice. The opinion "abortions= wrong choice" comes through loud and clear.

What a bunch of ignorant, grasping, disingenuous, manipulative, misogynistic, fear mongering, loathing bull@!$%#.

Why don't these type of Christians hold prayer circles when men spill their seed while watching the porn they watch in their closets?

I appreciate (for the most part) the tone of the video. Deciding to have an abortion is a big decision. It's saddening, even depressing, but most of all not a decision to be taken lightly.

The part that was left out, unless it is no longer applicable with a new more effective pill, is that the pill may not cause the body to discharge everything and a surgical abortion will need to be performed. Both abortion methods would need to be paid for by the patient.

The doctor's dialogue was over dramatized and not at all how the information is often conveyed. Shame on the ad maker for that leading dialogue.

Only to those women who believe crap like this coming from crap men who demand submissive adherence to crap like this.

Because nothing means more to them than the opinion a man has about them.

Spot on, Golden.

I've often wondered why religious women support Christianity. The bulk of attacks on abortion laws and womens rights come from right wing Christian groups. At least it seems that way.

Grisham, thank you.

I don't understand people of any denomination who define themselves solely by their religion. My faith, does not lead or define me....it is a part of me. Just because I am Catholic does not mean I cannot exercise my free will to agree or disagree with it's dogma in whole or in part. I am a human being first that happens to be Catholic not the other way around.

I do not base my beliefs solely on my faith's dogma.

I don't understand those, especially women, who do either.

David

My boyfriend is a Libertarian. I am a Democrat. We have our differences politically, ideologically, philosophically on a myriad of issues. We make it work with mutual respect and the ability to know when to agree to disagree.

But one of the things we both agree on without reservation is we are both staunchly Pro-Choice but are not for abortions for recreational use. No late term abortions unless it is absolutely medically necessary. Abortions only in the case of rape, incest, danger to the mother or little chance of viability after birth of the fetus.

We are all endowed with free will and within that lies the ability of unimpeded personal choice.

With the preemie babies living after only being in for 5 months these days its pushing back the times that people thought were viable abortion times.

Even minimal rates of fetal viability (less than 25 percent) don't occur until about 23 weeks, not much different from the 24 weeks the Supreme Court found nearly 40 years ago.

If they can keep them alive, they're viable. Success varies from preemie to preemie and is hugely dependent on the birth weight. That's why many states don't have a cutoff on the legality of abortion based on a certain number of weeks, but on "viability" which has to be determined by a physician, sometimes two.

I basically have the same take as you, but I do have a problem with the added commentary the "doctor" provided with his medical explanation. The doctors do not sound so dire, they confirm you understand what was said, they, or at least some, ask if you are alright emotionally, but it's nothing like how the doctor behaved in the video.

It's religious anti-abortion propaganda. Dig down into the counseling referral links, and you eventually get to their "faith-based" nonprofits.
